Tom Smith

As part of the EdCounsel team, Tom provides timely and accurate advice to school leaders on a wide variety of matters – from personnel and student matters, to bidding, contracts, and construction. He uses his experience handling an extensive array of legal issues to provide advice to school leaders facing new and challenging problems on a daily basis. He works hard to earn the trust of our clients and provide the legal advice they need, and it all stems from a deep belief in the values and mission of public education.

Tom’s advocacy for public education began with his own educational path. Having grown up in the St. Louis area, he attended school in the Fort Zumwalt School District from kindergarten through high school. He later went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree at Truman State University, where he majored in Justice Systems and minored in English. Tom later received his Juris Doctorate from Mizzou.

Though he has been part of the EdCounsel team for many years, Tom recently relocated back to St. Louis to lead the firm’s Lake St. Louis office. When Tom isn’t in the office, he enjoys spending his free time with family and friends, and exploring St. Louis with his dog, Tuff. He is also actively involved in the rugby community in Missouri. Prior to relocating to St. Louis, Tom was the head coach of the Jefferson City Rugby Club’s high school boys’ team for 5 years, coached the Mizzou Women’s Rugby Team, and served as legal counsel to Missouri Youth Rugby.
