Student Record Requests: FERPA Disclosure Chart
May 4, 2021 – It’s another student records request. District office staff took a call about a request but may not have gathered all necessary information, so they are calling the requestor back for more details.
While districts are happy to fulfill these requests under the law, they can be time consuming, considering who is requesting information and if the person should have access to student records. What three questions should district staff consider prior to a records release so requests are processed efficiently while staying legally compliant?
In this week’s blog post, our EdCounsel team is sharing a FERPA Disclosure Chart to assist districts in the collection of necessary information from requestors. When district administration responds to requests, they will have necessary information to easily determine who can receive the requested records as well as the steps to take before disclosing personally identifiable information.
